A California kid born in Burbank, UCLA grad, former teachers union arbitrator, U.S. Army vet who survived Vietnam and became a lifelong activist maintaining principals of fairness and truth. Travers made extraordinary contributions to the community of Hermosa Beach as well as to Rotary International.

Fortunately for Rotary International's Los Angeles District, it includes the remarkable Past District Governor, Cozette Vergari (Past President of the Westchester Rotary Club). Cozette, among other accolades, is a lawyer and a fierce advocate for the victims and survivors of heinous crimes, and became personally driven to fight for minors, efforts to protect the innocent, especially young children who have been siphoned from our neighborhoods, schools, parks and airports, almost right before our eyes but unrecognized by many, victims and survivors of sex trafficking.
During her Rotary district governorship in 2017, Cozette began coalescing a team of dedicated and passionate professionals to combat this growing epidemic in our cities and states coast-to-coast and created the first ever "cause-based club" in Los Angeles, Rotarians Fighting Human Trafficking.
A fun and lighthearted demotion party held in honor of Todd Saks' year as president was held at Decadence in Hermosa Beach.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Bruce Newlin on April 27, 2024, the inaugural Director of the UCLA Principal Leadership Institute and former Hermosa Beach School District Superintendent dedicated and compassionate educator who led with kindness and a warm heart. Bruce was an honorary member of the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club.
Two 8th grade honorees from Our Lady of Guadalupe School were awarded Student of the Year for 2024. Both students excel not only academically but most carefully selected by teachers and principal for embodying the Rotary principles of service above self, fairness, equality and promoting good citizenship.
Throughout the years our club has had several community members who sat on the board of the local chamber. So it is not only fitting but exciting to welcome Jessica Accamando representing the Hermosa Chamber of Commerce as the club's newest member!

Excited for Tuesday, March 26, to learn more about one of Hermosa Beach's community action nonprofits, Leadership Hermosa,
hoping to give local eateries a boost with its 2024 class project- Top Dish Hermosa!
In the month of April, 40 local restaurants offer a menu that includes a three-item tasting sampler plate. People who choose the tasting sampler can then vote on their favorite of the three by scanning a QR code. One recipe from each restaurant will be featured in a “Top Dish Cookbook” to be published in June.
Hermosa Beach Rotary has had a long-standing relationship with the Hermosa Beach Historical Society Museum. In March 2024 we presented another check in support of the great work the Museum does curating local treasured memories.

We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.
South Bay Families Connected is a FREE community resource is available to teens, parents and schools for social and emotional wellness of South Bay youth. SBFC provides support, resources and education to parents, caregivers and teens to help them reach their full potential to hopefully lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Proud to be working with the Weiss Foundation to provide scholarships to girls and boys in Kenya so that they can go to High School. Our scholars just started high school via boarding school and it is a very big deal! If it wasn’t for outside support, many would be home instead.

Every day since the brutal Russian invasion of the Ukraine, John Hewko has connected with those under attack.
Hewko, the General Secretary and CEO of Evanston-based Rotary International, takes out his cell phone and calls people he knows in Kyiv and in other parts of that nation, friends and family.
Hewko understands Ukraine and the current plight of Ukrainians far better than do most Americans.
His parents escaped from Ukraine during World War II. Hewko later went to there to work and, as a young lawyer in 1991, helped write the first draft of Ukraine’s post-Soviet constitution.
A longstanding tradition- both for Halloween hilarity at Hermosa Valley School and for local Rotarians to cook and serve the hot dogs!

Heartbroken to lose Mike Welch, we commemorate his fascinating life and commitment to Service.
Mike joined Hermosa Beach Rotary in 2012 after attending a meeting to honor his son Andrew, who was named Student of the Month. He was so very proud of his family and his community. Mike had many talents and served in a variety of capacities to manage the building rentals in addition to holding the position of both secretary and treasurer for several years.
Mike was an active board member for many years with the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 53 and in addition was the collaborator for our club with other local Vietnam Veterans who created and maintained the Memorial at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
A frequent speaker, Mike shared stories about his worldwide travels, including family treks to Australia, moreover his remarkable career with the U.S. Air Force CMSgt (ret) Mike M. Welch, and Boeing, as a “pathfinder loadmaster”. C-17s have played a vital role of delivering military personnel and equipment and often critical support to deliver humanitarian aid, especially in dire situations like the 2012 Haiti earthquake.
Longstanding supporters of Hermosa Beach schools, the HB Rotary Club Foundation provides funding for numerous programs that support students in all facets of their educational experience- from leadership skills to sports to the arts and sciences. We are proud to be part of the expansion of the Hermosa Beach Youth Music Program and look forward to Mr. Harrison's next concert!
Rotarians celebrate World Rotary Day in honor of the 116th anniversary of the first Rotary meeting on February 23, 1905.
District Leader, James Jackman, enlightened the Hermosa Beach club about current activities in Rotary's Youth Exchange program. RYE provides 15 to 18 year olds the opportunity to discover another culture by spending time overseas. In the long term exchange program, the students live for a full year in another country hosted by Rotarians. They experience a new culture, learn a new language and make lifelong friends. The short term program gives students the opportunity to spend 3 months during the summer overseas.
Rotarians across the planet promote peace, prevent and cure disease, provide clean water and sanitation, improve the health of mothers and children, support basic education and literacy, and provide economic and community development. The World Peace Conference 2020 will be held January 17-18 at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California, giving Rotarians and non-Rotarians from all sectors of society an opportunity to come together and learn from experts, moreover, to hopefully become inspired and leave with immediate action plans to implement within our communities.
Together, we can make a difference!

The daughter of a Rotarian from South Dakota, Governor Melody St. John has been immersed in Rotary her whole life. Past President of the Rotary Club of Hollywood, St. John is involved in a number of Rotary District 5280 initiatives. In fact, she has immersed herself in Rotary's Youth Exchange for over 25 years hosting students from around the world.

For the past fifty years or so at a meeting just before Christmas- our Hermosa Beach Rotary Club has been celebrating "Jim Bell Day" in memory of Colonel Bell from the Redondo Beach Salvation Army. This year the date is Tuesday, December 10. 2019.
This festive Tuesday meeting is open to guests as long as we know who is coming in advance. Entertainment will follow a delicious luncheon at 1 PM.

Both Emma Kelley and Fadi Rabadi are 100% focused on their upcoming studies at Bishop Montgomery High School. This year’s Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG) Students of the Year actually sidestepped questions about college or professional plans.
And, both students astounded us with their witty and creative approaches to their final language arts projects in which they were to write and cast a play. Emma’s “Shakespeare’s Lost Play” featured the play as the lead character, while Fadi crafted a biting political satire featuring Donald Trump’s wig!
Because of her love for books, Emma started the Dolphin Reading Program at OLG and her mother says, “She makes me want to be a better person because she raises the bar so high.” As the oldest of four children, Emma naturally gravitates to leadership.
Fadi is described by his teacher as a science genius (“I mean NASA-worthy!”) but he loves math, too. Spending his summers in Jordan has been eye-opening for Fadi, who quipped, “My parents speak to me in Arabic and I respond back in English!” In his spare time, he plays basketball and enjoys going to brunch each Sunday after church. In fact, he cites his parents as his most important role models because they help him practice his Catholic faith.

The first service club ever, Rotary was founded in 1905 and rapidly expanded all over the world. Also a first for Hermosa Beach, our city forefathers formed the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club in 1931. The historic clubhouse was built by local Hermosa resident Rotarians, specifically constructed to benefit "youth" in the community. Centrally located, the clubhouse hosts community-friendly activities including theatrical events, meetings and/or educational classes and wellness. It's remarkable to note that the Hermosa Beach Rotary sponsors several local youth groups including Lady Mamba basketball, Venture Crew, Cub Scouts, Boy & Girl Scouts and the clubhouse is home base to Troop 860 with over 160 families throughout the South Bay area and an unprecedented number of Eagle Scouts have graduated here.
Find some time to wander the adjacent Valley Park and you'll discover details initially funded by this Rotary club including an ADA accessible playground as well as a botanical garden to preserve California Native flora in partnership with the City and local non-profit Friends of the Parks. The club also sponsors the Friday Farmers Market on Valley Drive, a uniquely certified organic produce market. Proceeds fund numerous charitable endeavors for local non-profits as well as global efforts including food and shelter, clean water and health.

Fortunately for Rotary International's Los Angeles District, it includes the remarkable Past District Governor, Cozette Vergari (Past President of the Westchester Rotary Club). Cozette, among other accolades, is a lawyer and a fierce advocate for the victims and survivors of heinous crimes, and became personally driven to fight for minors, efforts to protect the innocent, especially young children who have been siphoned from our neighborhoods, schools, parks and airports, almost right before our eyes but unrecognized by many, victims and survivors of sex trafficking.
During her Rotary district governorship in 2017, Cozette began coalescing a team of dedicated and passionate professionals to combat this growing epidemic in our cities and states coast-to-coast and created the first ever "cause-based club" in Los Angeles, Rotarians Fighting Human Trafficking.
A fun and lighthearted demotion party held in honor of Todd Saks' year as president was held at Decadence in Hermosa Beach.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Bruce Newlin on April 27, 2024, the inaugural Director of the UCLA Principal Leadership Institute and former Hermosa Beach School District Superintendent dedicated and compassionate educator who led with kindness and a warm heart. Bruce was an honorary member of the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club.
Two 8th grade honorees from Our Lady of Guadalupe School were awarded Student of the Year for 2024. Both students excel not only academically but most carefully selected by teachers and principal for embodying the Rotary principles of service above self, fairness, equality and promoting good citizenship.
Throughout the years our club has had several community members who sat on the board of the local chamber. So it is not only fitting but exciting to welcome Jessica Accamando representing the Hermosa Chamber of Commerce as the club's newest member!

Nicole Burke of Hermosa Beach Sister Cities will be presenting more detail about their programs in Loreto Baja Mexico including fire rescue training and important fundraising toward badly needed equipment. Rotary is on deck and several clubs joining hands to support. Hermosa Beach Rotary Club Foundation already provided partial funding for two trainings right now in Loreto: 1) Advanced Rope Rescue and Extractions and 2) Basic Fire Investigations
Today, Hermosa Beach Sister City Association, is asking for support for the purchase of a Fire Truck for Loreto.
Our April service project on Tuesday, April 9th will assemble dental kits for the South Bay Children's Health Center. All are welcome.

Excited for Tuesday, March 26, to learn more about one of Hermosa Beach's community action nonprofits, Leadership Hermosa,
hoping to give local eateries a boost with its 2024 class project- Top Dish Hermosa!
In the month of April, 40 local restaurants offer a menu that includes a three-item tasting sampler plate. People who choose the tasting sampler can then vote on their favorite of the three by scanning a QR code. One recipe from each restaurant will be featured in a “Top Dish Cookbook” to be published in June.
Hermosa Beach Rotary has had a long-standing relationship with the Hermosa Beach Historical Society Museum. In March 2024 we presented another check in support of the great work the Museum does curating local treasured memories.

South Bay Families Connected is a FREE community resource is available to teens, parents and schools for social and emotional wellness of South Bay youth. SBFC provides support, resources and education to parents, caregivers and teens to help them reach their full potential to hopefully lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Proud to be working with the Weiss Foundation to provide scholarships to girls and boys in Kenya so that they can go to High School. Our scholars just started high school via boarding school and it is a very big deal! If it wasn’t for outside support, many would be home instead.
