january Students of the Month
Claudia Sarnoff Honored
According to HVS teachers, Claudia Sarnoff stands out amongst her peers because she is "conscientious." She considers Math and Spanish as her favorite courses, but also relishes writing fiction, which she does with her dad. She also likes to play soccer and basketball, and helps with animal rescue. Her mom, Donna, wanted us to know that Claudia has been helping their elderly neighbors with chores and companionship, a wonderful example of Rotary's motto: "Service Above Self." Congratulations, Claudia!
Rotary Honors Lorenzo Maisto
Lorenzo Maisto stands out as "dedicated" according to HVS teachers, and considering his many, varied interests, that is a necessary trait to making it all happen. He considers Science and History his favorite school subjects, but in addition he likes tennis, piano and theater, where he has had important roles in several recent productions. He is most proud to have initiated a new Foundation: Helping 5th Graders adjust to Middle School. He recently pitched his Foundation to LA Charger Kicker, Cameron Dicker, whose Wholeheartedly Foundation empowers young teens to make a meaningful impact in their community. Congratulations, Lorenzo!

Rotary international and district 5280 partnership with habitat for humanity
Rotary International has formulated an official partnership with Habitat for Humanity to further leverage both organizations resources to help those in need.
Rotary and Habitat for Humanity International attract the same kind of service-minded people, and the partnership between these organizations encompasses an array of areas where housing intersects with Rotary's main causes.
District 5280 has initiated a program with Habitat to help those who lost homes in the Palisades fire. Although there are no specific projects yet identified, team members from both organizations are working to use both organizations to help where we can make a difference. Meanwhile The Palisades Rotary Club as well as others local clubs have been active in recovery efforts and family support. (Altadena is in an adjacent Rotary District.)
Cathy McCurdy 1951-2025
Hermosa Rotary is saddened by the passing of long-time Kiwanian and a good friend of Hermosa Rotary, Cathy McCurdy. A former Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year, Cathy was instrumental in Kiwanis' HVS Builders Club as well as a former member of the Hermosa School Board. Her Services are scheduled for 11:00am February 21 at St. Cross.
